SEO - The New Yellow Pages

"Let Your Fingers Do the Walking.” In 1964, this Yellow Pages ad campaign promoted the idea of using a phonebook featuring ads to search for information instead of driving. Today, we’re still letting our fingers do the walking, but now we “google,” which has been recognized as a verb meaning “to search” by the Oxford English and Merriam-Webster dictionaries.

Search engines are in a constant state of evolution to provide the user with the most relevant search results.

Also gone are the days when companies changed their name to AAA-Auto Insurance or Acme Painting to improve their Yellow Pages alphabetical listing. Try searching for a service category such as “auto insurance” and chances are that the first listing will not start with an “A.”

So, how do you get to the top of a search engine's results?

Well, the answer isn't simple. Factors could include:

  • Who your target audience is.
  • The keywords your demographic uses to search for a business or service.
  • How the copy on your website takes advantage of search engines’ functionality.
  • If your website is coded to make use of all available search enhancements.

This list could go on and on. Search engines are in a constant state of evolution to provide the user with the most relevant search results. Complex algorithms detect sentence structures containing key words, and search engines are even accessing your web browsing history.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) requires diligence, expertise, and time and is just not cost-effective for many companies to do internally.
